Frequently Asked Questions

What is changing about Mount Sinai’s participation in Cigna and Humana Medicare Advantage plans?

We are ending our participation in certain Medicare Advantage plans that are not providing the standard of service we believe our patients deserve. This means:

  • Effective Wednesday, January 1, Mount Sinai will no longer be in Cigna’s Medicare Advantage network.
  • Effective Saturday, March 1, Mount Sinai will no longer be in Humana’s Medicare Advantage network.

Why is Mount Sinai doing this?

We are making this change because we want to ensure that our patients receive the best level of service possible. We believe that decisions about your medical treatment should be made by you and your physician, so we want to work only with health plans that allow us to care for you in this way. To ensure that the plans we participate with will meet this standard, effective Wednesday, January 1, Mount Sinai is out of network with Cigna Medicare Advantage plans, and effective Saturday, March 1, Mount Sinai will be out of network with Humana Medicare Advantage plans.

When will Mount Sinai services, physicians, and facilities no longer be in network with my Medicare Advantage plan?

Effective Wednesday, January 1, Mount Sinai is out of Cigna’s Medicare Advantage network. Effective Saturday, March 1, Mount Sinai will be out of Humana’s Medicare Advantage network. It is important to know that Mount Sinai Health System remains in network with each plan through that plan’s termination date.

What can I do to protect my access to care at Mount Sinai?

Even though the Medicare annual enrollment period in the fall has passed, you may have another opportunity to make changes to your Medicare coverage. If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can make a one-time change to your Medicare coverage election between now and March 31, 2025. During this time, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or to Original (traditional) Medicare to protect your in-network access. Once you make this change, your new coverage generally would begin on the first day of the following month. For example, if you changed your plan on January 1, your coverage in that plan would begin on Saturday, February 1.

For Cigna Medicare Advantage Patients

Effective Wednesday, January 1, Mount Sinai is no longer part of Cigna’s Medicare Advantage network. If you do not choose a new plan, Mount Sinai will be out of network for you until you make that change. After March 31, if you have not selected a new plan, you generally will not be able to regain in-network access in 2025.

For Humana Medicare Advantage Patients

Effective Saturday, March 1, Mount Sinai will no longer be part of Humana’s Medicare Advantage network. If you do not choose a new plan, Mount Sinai will be out of network for you until you make that change. After the Medicare Advantage enrollment period ends on March 31, if you have not selected a new plan, you generally will not be able to regain in-network access in 2025.

What happens if I continue my Medicare Advantage coverage through Cigna or Humana?

If you decide to continue your Medicare Advantage coverage through Cigna or Humana, the insurer may require you to pay more out of pocket to continue receiving health care from the Mount Sinai providers you trust. It would mean that you may need to use out-of-network benefits (if available through your plan) and/or pay for your care without the aid of insurance.

Will emergency care still be covered in network?

Emergency care is always covered, no matter our network status with Cigna or Humana. Cigna or Humana will be required by law to cover the emergency care we provide, and Mount Sinai stands ready to provide that care.
